Top 6 Places to Watch Fourth of July Fireworks in North Georgia

Every July, I find myself scrambling to see Fourth of July fireworks shows near my home in Northern Georgia. As a resident of the state for over twenty years, I think it would be an easy task. Unfortunately, it has become more difficult with the population exploding over the last two decades. Many of the best fireworks shows have become so crowded that you might be tempted to stay home and watch your neighbors shoot off a few fireworks — fingers too!

While this might be a tempting alternative, there are still some great North Georgia locations where you can catch an impressive fireworks display and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area. So, instead of heading to Stone Mountain, consider one of these options for Independence Day.

Ellijay

Ellijay is a beautiful little town in the heart of Georgia’s Blue Ridge mountains. When it comes to Independence Day festivities, they offer quite a few, including a Fourth of July parade, live music at Ott Vineyards & Winery, and fireworks displays on both the holiday and the following Saturday. The town of Ellijay is also conveniently located near a couple of state parks for those looking to take an Independence Day road trip.

Helen

Helen is another excellent option if you are looking to catch some fireworks on Independence Day. While I may not be the biggest fan of the town, it does offer a ton of options for a family day trip in the mountains. The German-themed town will have all-day celebrations, culminating in a fireworks show at 9:00 PM. If you want more activities outside of the town itself, you will find plenty, with a few state parks and wineries nearby.

A word of advice — get there as early as possible and plan on staying. Helen is notoriously congested during weekends and holidays due to the one street for both entry and exit.

Nearby Attractions

Lake Blue Ridge

Not interested in heading to a small town? The lake experience will be your next best bet, and Lake Blue Ridge is the perfect option for viewing a stunning fireworks display. Fireworks are viewable beginning at 9:30 PM either by boat or any of the following: “Morganton Point Recreation Area”, Lake Blue Ridge Marina and near the Lake Blue Ridge Dam.

There are no festivals like the previous two towns put on, but if you want to bolster your experience with other activities, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and Asia Trail systems are nearby. You can even visit Mercier Orchards, Georgia’s premier apple orchard.

Nearby Attractions

  • Blue Ridge Scenic Railway: Hop on a vintage train for a scenic journey that promises stunning views and a memorable experience.

  • Mercier Orchards: Treat yourself to an afternoon of fruit picking at one of Georgia's premier apple orchards.

  • Aska Trail System: For those who enjoy an active holiday, these trails offer a fantastic hiking experience.

Lake Chatuge

Another option is to head to Lake Chatuge near the mountain town of Hiawassee. Not only does the lake offer a Fourth of July fireworks show starting at 9:45 PM but there will be a plethora of activities including a boat parade and concert. If neither of those peek your interest, nearby Vogel State Park and Brasstown Bald are close enough to make this a great destination for an active day trip.

Nearby Attractions

Lake Lanier

Technically not in the mountains but, still in North Georgia, Lake Lanier offers the best of both worlds when it comes to enjoying festivities and having outdoor options. Not only are fireworks viewable on multiple days, beginning at 10:00 PM, but Lake Lanier offers a water park and restaurants within the Lake Lanier Islands resort area.

If you want to view the fireworks, I recommend grabbing a good seat at Margaritaville, ordering an early dinner, and not getting up until the fireworks show begins. The restaurant usually has a crowd, and seats are hard to come by the later the evening goes.

Nearby Attractions

Lake Rabun

Another lake option in the mountains of North Georgia is Lake Rabun, where you can witness fireworks, whether by land or by boat. Choosing Lake Rabun will allow you to view a show advertised as their “pyrotechnic rendition of bombs bursting in air” starting around 9:15 PM on July 5.

Lake Rabun’s convenient location also makes it a great option if you are looking to make this into a one-day road trip. You will find outdoor options like Minnehaha Falls and Tallulah Gorge State Park, and you can also visit Wander North Georgia, Georgia’s premier outdoor store.

Nearby Attractions

  • Minnehaha Falls: These waterfalls are powered by Lake Rabun and are a quick hike for those looking for a beautiful view.

  • Tallulah Gorge State Park: Explore this beautiful state park, which features a beautiful gorge, waterfalls, and a hike across the gorge over an amazing suspension bridge.

  • Wander North Georgia: Visit Georgia’s premier outdoor store, a must-visit if you’re near the town of Clayton.

Keep in mind that Independence Day is the biggest holiday of the Summer, which means you are likely to get a crowd wherever you go. So make sure you arrive as early as possible to ensure you can get a good seat and take precautions to remain safe. Big crowds can bring reckless people, so make sure you remain aware of your surroundings and act responsibly. But most of all, have a fantastic Fourth of July!
