I will never leave home without this one essential item — a battery jump starter.
A few years ago I got stranded in a remote area of the Colorado mountains. I was visiting a unique place known as the Wheeler Geologic Area. Wheeler Geologic Area is an extremely remote area within the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It offers amazing views of wilderness, volcanic fields, and some epic hoodoo structures. A friend had told me about the place so I made sure it was on my list during my 2020 Pandemic Road Trip.
The road to Wheeler is not exactly a road. You either have to hike or take an off-road vehicle to get to the location. I, of course, took my Jeep. The twenty-mile drive there was beautiful, remote, and extremely bumpy. So bumpy that all my camping bins in the back of the Jeep Wrangler jumped around as I drove to the final destination.
Once I arrived, I decided to hike up to check out the structures up close and personal. When I came back from my hike, the night was quickly approaching and the temperature was falling. When I tried to turn on my Jeep, I was greeted by a click click noise. My battery was dead. Needless to say, I began to panic inside because there was no one in the area.
Luckily, it wasn’t long before an older couple came to camp in the same area. After asking for their assistance, they rummaged through their vehicle but could not find jumper cables. I immediately ordered one on Amazon as soon as I got back to cell phone range. It is a necessity because of the types of trips I do and the areas I go to. I like to go to extremely remote areas, where there is no cell signal and very few people for miles. When taking that type of risk, you must be prepared to sustain and recover yourself. I am also extremely introverted, so it is nice to be able to jump-start a dead battery without having the ask some Rando for assistance. #SorryNotSorry
Even though most people do not live life like that, I still always recommend having this or something similar just in case you run into a situation where you need to get back on the road quickly. Never leave home without a battery jump starter. You will thank me later.
